THE IRONY OF LIFE (10)😔😔
Duration: 4mins
While she tarried, he decided to go over his lines for the umpteenth time. He had barely reached the end when his dream girl walked in.
Was it her killer shape that couldn't stay concealed under her chocolate top and blue pencil skirt, or her slim, long legs that fitted perfectly her brown leather sandals as though they had grown into them?
Suddenly, Oreoluwa could feel his heart striking the walls of his chest.
“She’s here,” he whispered, tapping Jamani who was carried away in a conversation with the a pretty lady at the next table.
Together, they watched her sign in and disappeared into the usual corner.
“It’s time homie, go get your girl.”
“Wish me luck,” said Ore as he rose to his feet.
“You gat this man. I'll be here waiting, I mean, praying, ” said Jamani, smiling.
Ore forced a smile and got on his way. Following from a distance, he saw Cecilia’s back receded till she was in the room where she attended to Jamani the previous day, and shut the door behind her. In five minutes, she was out, all dressed in her uniform.
Ore emerged from the vantage point where he had been watching and waiting. He walked up to her as she approached.
“Hello,”
“Hi.”
Oh, her smile, her dimples, her soft tone, her red lips.
Ore’s heart went from striking Jazz to Rock. Beads of sweat broke out from his forehead.
“I ama…am Ooo…reoluu..wa,” he stuttered.
“Okay. What can I do for you?”
There was a long pause during which Ore’s mouth was opened but only poured out warm air.
It was as though he had been struck with dumbness by the gods.
At that point, if Cece could give him all eternity, he still wouldn’t be able to string out words.
“What of his lines?” you ask.
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind.
“Mister, ” Cece broke the ice.
That moment, Ore found his voice,
“I have been seeing you around here for some days now. I really like you. Your beaut…,”
“Well, I do not like you,” Cece cut him short. “I have got respectable customers to attend to. If you will excuse me.”
And off, she went.
Oh gosh!
I am such an idiot.
What just happened?
Jamani almost missed seeing Ore took the exit.
Stepping out to the street felt like he had escaped an oven. Cool, rustling breeze rushed at him, along came his lines, flooding his memory.
Hi beautiful,
I am Oreoluwa. Since the day I set my eyes on you, I have been unable to think of nothing else but you. Your smile, your lovely face, your perfectly chiseled shape the creator's best, your sexy carriage. Oh, the greatest thing my heart can achieve is to find something worth to dream, and girl, you are the dream.
I have a house where I stay, a room where I lay my head, but there is no where I’ll rather be than your heart. Will you please let me in?
“Hey Homie, Ieaving without me?” said Jamani as he caught up with him. “How did it go?”
By the time Ore was done narrating his experience, Jamani had doubled up by a sidewalk, laughing uncontrollably.
“I told ya. Now you know why I call her Saucy Cece.”
Ore didn’t mention forgetting his lines. He blamed his faltering on Jamani. His negative prediction had mounted anxiety on him.
I will need to do this on my own.
Even though things didn’t turn out the way Ore had dreamt, he was glad to have made the move. Poor or good, he had made an impression on Cecilia. Though a good first impression have lasting effect, the poor ones are as memorable as the good if not more than.
The young man who got dumbstruck while trying to express interest in her.
Next time, he wouldn't need an introduction.
Severally in the course of the week, Ore called up Cecilia in his mind, wondering each time what he could do to possess her. At a point, as though she had spoken to him and given him the how-to, an idea struck him. He would need a phone to actualize it. His mind went to the money he had been gathering from working at Mrs. Penelope's place, which he planned sending home to his parents. As much as he hated to, that would have to wait. Besides, owning a phone would give him easy access to them and vice versa. That alone would gladden their hearts.
The next day, Oreoluwa met Fatima at Mame African Cuisine, made arrangement with her to help buy a phone and a line. How he looked forward to his next move.
